Series ‘Islands’ exhibited with WorkOf at WantedDesign, NYC x DESIGN, May 2016.
Oil on wood, 61 x 40,5 cm (24 x 16 in) each.

The series of Islands is constructed as a narrative where the process of adding and layering confronts a gradual disappearance. Created over a period of four days in March 2015, these works embody intervals of times exploring the evolution of light and surface, shadows and images, distance and proximity.

A form of urgency, derived from accidents and choices, leads these abstract painting. Repetition generates a soothing pace. In this collection of works, the experimental and the reflective overlap, allowing the eye to explore gaps in between.

ruyi / as [you] wish, suzhou embroidery by Wang Lihua, silk threads, wooden frame, 2016
Gallery Huayuan Art, Artexpo New York, April 2016

ruyi/as [you] wish (2016) is a poetic experimentation with fabric and thread, imagined as a minimalist contemporary interpretation of a traditional silk embroidery by Chinese artist Wang Lihua. Her hand-woven embroidery is based on a photography of ‘A Gilding Copper Ruyi’ made in the Middle Qing Dynasty, currently in the collection of Taipei's National Palace Museum. A « Ruyi », which literally translates by "as desired; as [you] wish”, is a curved decorative object that serves as a ceremonial sceptre in Chinese Buddhism or a talisman symbolizing power and good fortune in Chinese folklore.

The design and colors of the embroidery inspire the global shape of the installation. Its pattern is projected into the third dimension by a hundred of silk threads stretched in space, giving materiality to the two dimensional image. The threads become structural, and create a new tension, form and rhythm. The public is invited to physically experience the embroidery process through tangible and optical sensations.
