PS122 Gallery presents a group exhibition featuring the 2019 Project Studio Residents at Painting Space 122. In addition to the gallery, members of Painting Space 122, for over two decades, have offered support through the Project Studio Residency program by providing workspace studios at below-market rates to a diverse group of professional artists. Following a six-year building renovation, the program has been fully re-established, concluding, for the first time, with a group exhibition of Project Studio Residents at PS122 Gallery .

In the larger gallery space, KIOSK presents a shop consisting of a collection of objects arranged within an installation that functions as a site of display. The environment, which combines Dieter Rams’ iconic shelving system for Vitsoe with KIOSK’s own handmade shelves fashioned out of foam core, is emblematic of KIOSK’s non-hierarchical approach to considerations of design—combining iconic and vernacular, found and made, new and old.

Pour cette deuxième édition de la foire d’art contemporain BIENVENUE, la Galerie Isabelle Gounod a conçu un group show autour du thème du paysage et de la manière dont chacun des artistes présentés se l’approprie et en détourne les formes jusqu’aux limites de l’abstraction.

A l’univers onirique d’Audrey Matt Aubert viendra ainsi répondre la radicalité et la poésie de la dernière série d’huile sur papier de Jérémy Liron. Deux artistes dont l’attachement aux figures et aux formes de l’architecture dialogueront avec les installations de Sophie Kitching. Une peinture récente de la même artiste sera par ailleurs mise en relation avec une œuvre emblématique de Michaële Andréa Schatt, réalisée en hommage à son amie Joan Mitchell. Ces différentes propositions trouveront un contrepoint plus radical dans le travail de Leslie Smith III, qui explore les relations qui unissent formes, couleurs et sentiments, suivant une approche particulièrement humaniste et incarnée de l’abstraction. Abordant des questions liées à nos modes de consommation et à leur impact environnemental, la récente série de sculptures-objets de Florent Lamouroux viendra quant à elle apporter au projet une dimension plus critique.

After a week in Résidence at Vaste Horizon, Anne Carpentier’s guest house in Arles, Sophie Kitching opened her new solo show entitled ‘INVISIBLE GREEN’ at Galerie Vaste Horizon in Arles.
The exhibition opened on September 20 during Été Indien(s) #2 as part of their official program. Afterwards, we celebrated Emmanuelle Oddo’s new curatorial project ‘Chambre-A-Part back at the Vaste Horizon Hotel in the “Appartement-Terrasse”, featuring the works of artists: Caroline Denervaud | Martin Belou | Léa Dumayet | Maison Intègre | Camille Juthier | Sophie Kitching | Mano Mani | Martinet Texereau.

Peintures inspirées de Bali, livres rapportés de New York, aquarelles sur papier chinois et assemblages en pierre naturelle de Provence, l’exposition "Invisible Green" se déploie comme un carnet de voyage,
in progress.
Le travail de Sophie Kitching, artiste franco-britannique vivant entre Paris et New York, questionne notre rapport au paysage et à ses transformations. Elle compose ses œuvres à partir d’images et d’objets culturels et de matériaux qu’elle prélève au fil de ses déplacements, dans son environnement immédiat.
Invisible Green fait en outre référence à la couleur utilisée dans les parcs anglais de la fin du XVIIIème siècle pour peindre les grilles et les serres tropicales de manière à ce qu’elles disparaissent dans la végétation environnante. L’évocation du paysage comme un ensemble, dénaturé et transportable, est au cœur du travail de l’artiste.
S’agit-il toujours de nature, lorsque celle-ci est observée à distance, cloisonnée en un jardin d’hiver ou ressentie à l’intérieur de soi ?

A gentle falling in love. A floating down a stream. An embrace. A calm. A sway.

Sophie Kitching's work to me is about sensations. She sees and feels them, takes them and then transmits the feeling through objects, a painting, a cluster of things, a neon, confetti falling. It’s nothing I can firmly nail down, it’s just present. It’s based on illusion. 

There was smoke and there are mirrors...

She works with common materials trading up what you are accustomed to for something beyond. For her show at us called Window Series she has produced a number of new works, both paintings and sculptures. Tell me what you see when you look at them and you'll look at me with a dumb stare. They are ether, they are air, when you enter them you go to the other side. You know you are looking at beauty but you are not certain if you have been here before. Time and place shifts. 

Sophie has already had a number of solo and group shows. She studied in Paris and currently lives in New York. She is on the up and up. We are very fortunate to have a body of her work with us as our first gallery show and opening in Marseille.

Bringing together set design, floral installations, and painting, CONCRETE BLOSSOMS, consists of pieces from artists Jefferson Fouquet and Sophie Kitching. Brought together for their experimental approaches, Fouquet and Kitching have built a unique world for KENZO – an ethereal environment both natural and intimate.

Parades stages birds perched on wires among airplane trails, palm trees, train rides. Pelicans, pigeons, herons, ducklings, and a caterpillar that take center stage in the passing of untouched flora. Their courtships overlap family scenes and panoramas shot in Tokyo, Havana, Mexico, Bali, and different parts of the US and France.
Sophie Kitching has recently exhibited at Palais de Tokyo, Maison de Chateaubriand, Villa Emerige, Paris; 67, New York; Grande Surface, Brussels; fffriedrich, Frankfurt. She has been granted a Studio Residency by PS122, NYC, 2018-2019. Born 1990, Isle of Wight, UK, she lives and works in New York and Paris.

‘Flower Power AT LA LOUISIANE’

Anaid Demir, art critic and curator, is taking over La Louisiane for a very special exhibition called Flower Power, as part of the Parcours Saint-Germain, in the form of an ode to the hotel and its many convoluted corridors which hold the history of Paris in the 60s and 70s. Seven contemporary artists are thus paying homage to this explosively creative era by giving their take on the hippie movement and making it resonate in today’s climate. Artworks by Martine Aballéa, Pierre Joseph, Vidya Gastaldon, Hsia-Fei Chang, Frank Perrin, Suzanne Husky and Sophie Kitching all share a taste for the psychedelic.

The Flower Power exhibition runs from May 23rd through June 2nd at La Louisiane.

Eco Shifter refers to the ability to interact, adapt, transform and create new relationships with the environment.
With the vanishing of referential backgrounds, we are inevitably bound to unprecedented panoramas. Our daily navigation has become far-out exchange of motionless protocols.
In these settings, once secluded artists turn into eco shifters or denizens of a peripheral ecosystem through permanent adjustments as the only strategy of adaptation and uncertain balance, in order to act as modifying agents.
Suffice to say that any contribution to these omnipresent system implies a shift in nature and relocation, going back to a temporary but conceptual solitude.

Dans quelques-unes des chambres de l’hôtel La Louisiane, réunis sous la bannière du célèbre slogan hippie « Flower Power », six artistes contemporains ravivent à leur manière les couleurs des années 60-70. Psyké, fleuri, hippie et happy, c’est la fleur au fusil que l’on découvre les œuvres Martine Aballéa, Pierre Joseph, Vidya Gastaldon, Hsia-Fei-Chang et Frank Perrin, Suzanne Husky, Sophie Kitching... le long de notre visite.

October 1852. In his diary, the writer and philosopher Henri Frédéric Amiel records the memory of a walk in the garden before concluding: "Any landscape is a state of the soul." Anticipating the precepts of a phenomenology of perception, as defined in particular by Maurice Merleau-Ponty nearly a century later, Amiel here distinguishes the landscape as a subjective space, at the bottom of which resounds the double impact of the affectivity of the about the world and the world on the subject. Unlike the place that pre-exists the walker and survives after him, the landscapeseems entirely dependent on its passage. Image alive and inhabited by him, it hatches and fades at the edge of the eyes that contemplate it, on the threshold of the words that resurrect it. It is nothing but the world lived and described by the subject, an object of desire and remembrance. The work of Sophie Kitching shares this same commitment to retranscribe the affective experience of everyday life, with which she keeps renewing through her installations, paintings, videos and sculptures. Her method, based on the analytic observation of her environment, allows her to break down each element and each movement to keep it in fine the most essential forms: the shimmer of the wave and the crackling of the foliage, the blade of a reflection or the freshness of a shadow. Octobre 1852. Dans son journal, l’écrivain et philosophe Henri Frédéric Amiel consigne le souvenir d’une promenade au jardin avant de conclure : « Un paysage quelconque est un état de l’âme ». Anticipant les préceptes d’une phénoménologie de la perception, telle que définie notamment par Maurice Merleau-Ponty près d’un siècle plus tard, Amiel distingue ici le paysage comme un espace subjectif, au creux duquel résonne le double retentissement de l’affectivité du sujet sur le monde et du monde sur le sujet. A la différence du lieu qui préexiste au promeneur et survit après lui, le paysage paraît tout entier dépendant de son passage. Image vivante et habitée par lui, il éclot et se fane au bord des yeux qui le contemplent, au seuil des mots qui le ressuscitent. Il n’est autre chose que le monde vécu et décrit par le sujet, un objet du désir et du souvenir.

Le travail de Sophie Kitching partage ce même attachement à retranscrire l’expérience affective du quotidien, avec laquelle elle ne cesse de renouer à travers ses installations, peintures, vidéos et sculptures. Sa méthode, fondée sur l’observation analytique de son environnement, lui permet d’en décomposer chaque élément et chaque mouvement pour n’en garder in fine que les formes les plus essentielles : le miroitement de l’onde et le crépitement des frondaisons, la lame d’un reflet ou la fraîcheur d’une ombre. Invited by Studio Marant to revisit the traditional Russian Doll, I created ’Tuki’, a matriochka-piñata inspired by the Nenets tribe, the nomadic people living in the Siberian Arctic. The women wear a long coat called Yagushka made of eight reindeer skins embroidered with ornaments, which has allowed them to travel for over a thousand years across the immense and frozen tundra.
‘Tuki’ is on view at Merci Paris for their 10 year anniversary exhibition ‘MISAOTRA’, to benefit the Merci Endowment Fund in Madagascar.

New collaboration and upcoming solo show — Galerie Isabelle Gounod

A travers sa pratique, Sophie Kitching transforme des images et objets culturels en installations, vidéos, peintures et performances. Fondé sur l’observation critique de son environnement, son travail explore des concepts liés à la mobilité, la dénaturation, l’utopie, le souvenir.
S’attachant à produire des espaces plutôt que des images, ses œuvres sont pensées avant tout en termes de systèmes et proposent des intervalles de projection, éphémères et fragmentés, où différentes réalités se superposent. Le paysage, quant à lui, se retrouve appréhendé dès lors comme un milieu actif, que l’artiste explore comme contexte, contenu et forme.
Suivant une démarche conceptuelle, Sophie Kitching construit ainsi un entre-deux poétique propre à instaurer un sentiment d’immédiate proximité, et une possible intimité avec ses oeuvres.
