"Sophie Kitching, peintre à rebours"
October 2024
Entretien de Thibault Bissirier
2 October 2024

You can't have a rainbow without a little rain
the taste of Studio Jeppe Hein
2024
Published by Buchhandlung Walther König
Recipes, ingredients, photos and illustrations / Photos of artworks, studio life and exhibition projects with photos of ingredients, our rooftop garden, the kitchen and our lunch together. We also asked four of our favorite colleagues - Sophie Kitching, Jose Dávila, Lilibeth Cuenca Rasmussen and Anselm Reyle - to create an artist dinner with us.
YOU CAN'T HAVE A RAINBOW WITHOUT A LITTLE RAIN. The taste of Studio Jeppe Hein is not a typical cookbook, just as it isn’t merely an art book. Besides recipes from the studio kitchen, it provides an exclusive insight into the studio and the art that is created there. Images of artworks, studio life and exhibition projects mingle with images of ingredients, the roof garden, the kitchen and shared lunches. Artists Sophie Kitching, Jose Dávila, Lilibeth Cuenca Rasmussen and Anselm Reyle each hosted a rainbow dinner. Author and philosopher Finn Janning contributes with a Philosophy of the Saucepan. The book illustrates our great passion for art and cooking and how important eating together is to us in our life and work.

CONSTANTLY DEVALUED, FEMININITY IS FAR MORE OFTEN CALLED INTO QUESTION THAN MASCULINITY EVER IS. BY SHEER FORCE OF CONFRONTING SO MANY CLICHÉS, 1970S FEMINIST ARTISTS WERE ABLE TO VIOLENTLY CHALLENGE THEIR IDENTITY AS WOMEN. BECAUSE ART IS NOT A SEPARATE SPHERE, WHERE EVERYONE ABANDONS THEIR INDIVIDUALITY FOR AN ILLUSORY NEUTRALITY. IF FEMININITY IS STILL OFTEN EXPERIENCED AS A SOCIAL CONSTRAINT, THE CHALLENGE IS TO RECONNECT WITH A FREEDOM OF ACTION AND DISCOVER A GENUINE OPENNESS THAT COULD ENRICH ARTISTIC AND EMANCIPATORY SEARCH IN FRESH, NEW WAYS. BUT FAR FROM IDENTITY CLAIMS THAT ARE CONTENT TO OPPOSE THE MASCULINE, IT TURNS OUT THAT IF FEMININITY MAKES SENSE TODAY, IT IS IN A WAY THAT HAS A POTENTIAL FOR PLURALITY. IT’S AS IF THE IDENTITY SUPERNOVA HAD EXPLODED: THERE ARE NOW ONLY MINORITIES, PLURAL FEMININITIES IN THE THROES OF BECOMING, OPENING UP THE POSSIBILITY OF NEW REFERENCE POINTS AND DESIRES UNDER CONSTRUCTION. THIS ISSUE IS, THEREFORE, DEDICATED TO THE POTENTIAL OF THIS CONSTANTLY EXPANDING CONSTELLATION OF WOMEN...A.L

Sophie Kitching A PLUS D’UN TOUR SANS SON SAC
Article by Fabrice Gaignault
September 26, 2023

SERPENTI IN ART
July 2023
In celebration of the deep bond between the mythical snake and the world of art, Bulgari launches a capsule collection of Serpenti Forever handbags born from the collaboration with three contemporary artists who lent their creative vision to the icon of endless metamorphosis.
OPPOSING FORCES
Focusing on the duality of the snake and its infinite power of transformation, the artist Sophie Kitching plays with opposing forces - such as day and night, inside and outside - in her versions of the Serpenti Forever top handle bag. Nature-inspired motives, evoking the lively strokes of her paintings, animate the black and white Calf Leather body and culminate in the iconic snakehead closure with multicoloured enamel scales.”

Artist Sophie Kitching gives us the low-down
on her expressive Bulgari collaboration
Article by Josefin Forsberg
July 20, 2023
”Reimagining the iconic Serpenti snake for Bulgari to celebrate the 75 years of the motif, Sophie Kitching's artwork is tranformed into this season's most coveted limited edition handbag line. For the 'Serpenti Forever' capsule, Bulgari has tapped three contemporary artists, Sunwoo Kim, Zhou Li and Sophie Kitching for their painterly strokes of genius to reimagine its emblematic snake. Producing two iterations each, the capsule comprises six different designs each available in 75 copies. […]
While Kitching was given a total 'carte blanche', for her vision, she wanted to create a bag that would embrace and pay homage to Bulgari’s distinct identity. “Their unique approach to accessories is deeply rooted into the history of their fine Italian jewellery maison,” she says, and as such, the source of inspiration was infinite. “I had many different ideas based on my own art practice,” she says. “I felt strongly connected with their bold use of colour as a means of expression.”

“Designed by US-based artist Sophie Kitching, Opposing Forces is named after the dual nature of a snake and its propensity for transformation. Contrary to popular belief, serpents actually represent both good and evil so snake (affectionate) and snake (derogatory) both exist. Who would’ve thought?”

NEW YORK — SOPHIE KITCHING: “NOCTURNE” AT 3A GALLERY THROUGH FEBRUARY 26TH, 2023
Article by Alena Marchak
February 25th, 2023
“For her latest exhibition on view at 3A Gallery, Sophie Kitching presents new paintings from her Nocturne series, a shadowy and dreamy companion to her Invisible Green series, started in 2019. Both the Nocturnes and the Invisible Green paintings incorporate images of bright flowers and leaves as their main subject matter, but the former is painted onto a background made of black ink mixed with Payne’s gray whereas the latter is on a white canvas. The contrast of both and indeed the title itself—Nocturne—alludes to the opposites representing night and day versions of one another, but moreover they tell a subtle tale of light versus shadow and express entirely different temperaments and moods.”
