A keen observer of her environment, French-British artist Sophie Kitching creates installations, paintings, and sculptures that offer condensed versions of naturalistic phenomena. In her new and recent paintings on iridescent mylar and two-way mirror, the artist furthers her ongoing experimentation with surface material, light, and precise compositional imbalance.
Curated by Samuels Creative & Co. in collaboration with the artist, carte blanche offers a chromatic walk through the fifteen vitrines of the Avenue Gallery. These works on paper and polycarbonate panels use gestural mark-making to create an ambiguous sense of depth. Passersby might perceive a familiar reflection or recall a distant memory. At each stop, Kitching presents us with fragments of a landscape held in a vertical grid, a ray of light captured on a changing surface.
